Background of the Study

Family support plays a critical role in the health and well-being of elderly individuals, especially in regions where formal healthcare systems may not be fully equipped to meet the needs of aging populations. In Kebbi State, family members are often the primary caregivers for older adults, helping with daily activities, managing chronic conditions, and providing emotional support. The importance of family caregivers has been widely acknowledged, as their involvement significantly impacts patient outcomes, including the management of chronic diseases, mental health conditions, and mobility challenges (Bello et al., 2024).

This study aims to appraise the role of family support in managing elderly patients in Kebbi State, focusing on both the positive outcomes of family involvement and the challenges faced by family caregivers in providing care for older adults. It will explore how family caregivers contribute to the physical, emotional, and social well-being of elderly patients.

Statement of the Problem

Although family support is crucial in the management of elderly individuals, especially in rural areas of Kebbi State, there is limited understanding of its effectiveness and the challenges caregivers face. Family caregivers may experience emotional, physical, and financial strain, which can affect the quality of care they provide. This study aims to evaluate the role of family support in elderly care and assess how it influences the management of chronic diseases and overall health outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of family support on the management of chronic conditions among elderly patients in Kebbi State.

  2. To explore the challenges faced by family caregivers in providing care for elderly individuals in Kebbi State.

  3. To examine the role of family support in improving the emotional and social well-being of elderly individuals in Kebbi State.

Research Questions

  1. How does family support impact the management of chronic health conditions among elderly patients in Kebbi State?

  2. What challenges do family caregivers face in managing elderly care in Kebbi State?

  3. How does family support influence the emotional and social well-being of elderly patients in Kebbi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Family support significantly improves the management of chronic conditions among elderly individuals in Kebbi State.

  2. Family caregivers face significant challenges, including emotional, physical, and financial strain, in caring for elderly individuals in Kebbi State.

  3. Family support positively influences the emotional and social well-being of elderly patients in Kebbi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on elderly patients receiving care at home with the involvement of family members in both urban and rural areas of Kebbi State. Limitations may include biases in caregiver self-reporting and the difficulty of assessing the long-term impact of family support.

Definitions of Terms

  • Elderly: Individuals aged 65 and above, who often require assistance due to aging-related conditions.
